The test report
First impression of the packaging
In the first step of our THO testing process, the packaging is examined. Does it provide adequate protection for the product? Are the necessary manufacturer contact details and a service hotline printed on it?
| Evaluation category | Result | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Quality product packaging | The mattress arrived securely packaged in a cardboard box with additional plastic wrap around the mattress. | 100 |
| Contact options available | Contact options are available on the slide | 100 |
| Total | 100 |
BeCo’s 7-zone reversible mattress came in the usual cardboard box. The mattress itself is wrapped in plastic to protect it from dirt. The plastic is easy to remove and damage can be avoided thanks to the sufficient distance between the plastic and the mattress.
The foil also contains contact information (e-mail address and telephone number) so that the manufacturer can be contacted.
First impression of the product after opening the packaging
After opening the packaging and evaluating it, we take a closer look at the product’s workmanship. How high-quality are the materials used, and how do they feel and appear ?
Weighting: 30% *The maximum score is 100 points
| Evaluation category | Result | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Package contents and scope | Complete | 100 |
| Instructions for use | Tips and care instructions are included | 100 |
| Smell: | Barely any smell of its own and very mild | 100 |
| Visual appearance: | Neat workmanship, no open seams | 100 |
| Workmanship | High-quality mattress cover, zip and foam | 100 |
| Total | 100 |
When unpacking, we checked the Ergo Star mattress for any smell. However, there was only a mild smell, which was not unpleasant at all. As mattresses always smell a little anyway, we were pleasantly surprised by this one.
An instruction leaflet is included, providing information on safe unpacking and proper care.
The quality of workmanship is very good and no defects were found; both the zip and the seams of the fabric are flawless. The incisions in the fabric of the mattress are clean and symmetrical. We could not find any defects in the mattress.
The practical test
The practical test carries the greatest weight. Here, the product must undergo a variety of criteria and examinations by our independent testers. We test the functions promised by the manufacturer of the item under review.
| Evaluation category | Result | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Colour & size | Product arrived as expected, size information is accurate. | 100 |
| Weight | Surprisingly light, easy to turn | 100 |
| Support for the spine | Good support in all lying positions | 100 |
| Pressure relief | The pressure relief is good and provides pleasant comfort | 100 |
| Hardness | The hardness levels vary and therefore it falls into the categories H2 and H3. | 100 |
| Total | 100 |
The dimensions of the Ergo Star correspond to those stated. Our test mattress measures 200 by 90 cm and is approximately 18 cm high.
The BeCo Ergo Star is a reversible mattress – practical loops make it easy to lift and carry. The mattress is lightweight, which makes turning it over a breeze. The practical loops make turning it over even easier.
The mattress we tested is a hybrid mattress, which is why it has different types of foam that are clearly visible when the cover is removed: it consists of an Airflex foam layer at the top (recognisable by the red foam), a supportive layer and a 7-zone comfort foam layer at the bottom. Our weights clearly show that the mattress yields more in important areas, such as the shoulder area.
The stickers on both sides of the mattress are particularly useful, as they allow you to immediately see which side is the lighter one. In addition, if they should ever come off, you can still tell which side is which by the proximity to the red zip.
We cannot determine the degrees of firmness directly, but the softer sleeping surface gives way more than the harder one, which is why we can assume that we actually have an H2 and H3 sleeping surface here.
General
Our final evaluation category focuses on the price-performance ratio and the conformity with the online presentation. This category is weighted at 10%.
| Evaluation category | Result | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | Good quality at an average price (mid-range) | 90 |
| Consistency with online presentation | Good images, realistic presentation | 100 |
| Total | 95 |
The BeCo reversible mattress with hybrid foam is mid-range in terms of price and offers good quality.
We once again analysed ten competing products with comparable or similar features – including hybrid foam or at least no pocket springs, identical dimensions and in the best case, a reversible mattress. The average price determined from this was €188.53. With a price of €199, our test mattress is therefore in line with the market average.
The online presentation is also impressive: the images used are high-quality and authentic, and illustrate the structure of the individual layers clearly and comprehensively. Overall, there are no complaints here.
